Reader Question - Master Closet Renovation
ARWS Reader Question Answered in a Jiff
When my friend Melissa emailed me a few weeks back asking for my expert advice on her master bedroom closet renovation below are some of the top suggestions I quickly emailed her back. Of course this sort of inquiry does throw me a bit of a curve ball. I haven't seen the space; I do not know the exact dimensions, shape, budget, etc. of her exciting home renovation. So, as you read through today's post please remember that this is just the beginning and would need to be tailored to your specific needs, wants, requirements, budget, time frame and the list goes on!
My stylish secrets, ideas & quick tips
for the perfect master bedroom closet!
Consider the following:
*** What are YOUR individual and personal needs for this dedicated space?
Do you LOVE shoes, belts, scarves, jackets, or etc.? Think about specific & appropriate storage for each and every item you own. Be sure to look through catalogs, magazines, blogs, websites, etc. for inspiration if you haven't yet and maybe even consider keeping a folder of images that you love or are inspired by.

*** Have a window added to the space! You will be grateful for the fresh air and cheery sunshine that will stream in each morning you wake up for another day of life! Plus having actual daylight reflecting off the colors and fabrics in your wardrobe should aid for a better pairing selection as you throw together the day's ensemble.
*** Add a little something that is undeniably YOU! An inspirational photo, your favorite work of art, a speaker system so you can listen to your preferred tunes, a gilded antique mirror and the list goes on! When you add small, extra touches such as these your space comes alive! You will feel better each morning when getting ready to face the day whether it be on the job, at school, with the kids or just hanging out chez vous!
*** Cedar is a closet's best friend! Consider a built in cedar chest portion for pricey cashmere, special pieces or even have your shoe rack made out of it.

Cedar lining helps keep musty smells and pesky bugs at bay
*** Lighting, lighting and more lighting!!! Be sure they install spots ALL over - more than you think you need - especially if there is no window in your walk-in. Also consider hanging a stylish chandelier in the middle of your space for more pizazz!
How about this one?
Or this one?
*** Think about undergarment/lingerie storage. Lavender scented drawer lining, lavender sachets, delicates wash bags, etc. Maybe you would even like a bra drawer built-in for great storage.
*** What about your jewelry? Are you the type of person that could create better outfits if all your jewelry was also housed in your walk-in?
*** Consider adding a safe for your valuables.
*** Be sure to add a full length mirror!
*** Don't forget everyone's need for a hamper. What works best for you? Sharing one with your significant other, separating lights from darks from delicates right away, something built-in to the cabinetry or a stand alone version?
*** Depending on the layout of the space it is always nice to have a covered bench, chair or ottoman to sit down in, kick off your shoes after a long days work.
*** Would your inspiration and desire to keep this space clean and organized be jazzed up a bit if say, the back wall of your closet was painted a fun color? This color could cast a shadow on your clothes so keep this in mind however it is a great way to add simple personality and pop.
*** Purchase high quality sweater bags. If budget is no problem for you, have cedar cubbies created and mounted on your closet wall to house your sweaters. No moths, no holes... a much happier you!

Margaret's Cleaners
*** Ventilation is important to keeping clothes in tip-top condition not to mention less "smelly"! Whether we like it or not we each have an individual scent that over time creeps into our closets and onto all of our clothes. For fresher smelling clothes install an environmentally friendly air freshener as well.
*** Ask your contractor to add at least 2 outlets to the space. One on your side and one on your hubby's. You might not think you need electricity now but it will come in handy someday!
*** Stash a small, hand-held steamer for those days when you just don't have time to pull out the iron and board.

I don't think I need to remind you that this sort of project is purely 100% personal, so go with what feels like you! I have spent a lot of {styling} time in my clients closets throughout the years and here are the top 3 negatives I encounter:
- Horrible lighting
- Stuffy smell/too warm
- Clothes that are damaged from improper care or cleaning
Keep these things in mind, enjoy the process, don't forget to purge while you are at it and send in a picture of your new space!
Happy renovating,
Kelli

Thank you for this entry. Nick and I were just talking yesterday about how to keep out cashmere and wool sweaters from getting holes. It seems as though every fall when we take them out, there are new holes. I will go and buy a cedar hanger to put in the closet. I hope it doesn't make everything smell like wood!

Thx so much for the comment you left on the Annie Horth interview. I e-mailed her a while ago to tell her how much I admired her work and she e-mailed back. We started talking, etc. She is a very sweet person and I hope to meet more such sincere, nice and helping people in the industry
