Declutter, Restore and Rest
This is what autumn is all about!

Declutter ~ I know so many of us put this off! I am here to encourage you to either do it yourself or hire a professional and get this done in the next 2 weeks. Dive into the changing of the seasons with the inspiration of being organized; knowing what fits you, works on your body and will go with you and your lifestyle through the coming cooler (cold) months.
Start by going through your closet, dresser, armoires and storage. Spend a couple hours purging, reorganizing and only storing away what you think you will really pull out and wear next spring.
* Give yourself the chance to be free from the emotional baggage that comes with certain clothing hanging in your closet. Don't think you have any... try again! We all do, no matter what.

Restore ~ Take anything that needs to be mended, hemmed etc. to your tailor. Get these pieces ready so you can wear them and put them into your closet rotation. Drop your jackets off at the dry cleaners or a specialty cleaner if you own leather, fur, etc. Be sure your cashmere sweaters, scarves, gloves and hats are ready to go, have them cleaned if necessary. In order to keep your favorite cashmere pieces in tip top shape, only have them cleaned 4 times a year. Any more than this and the fibers will break down leaving you with a sad looking sweater and you with a very disappointed look on your face.
You have devoted some time to weeding through your hoards of clothes so now take a moment for self-restoration. Make a cup of your favorite hot tea or a café creme, sit down near your closet and breathe. Envision organization, beautiful color combinations and endless inspiration coming from what you own; whether it be a smorgasbord of clothing or a well-trimmed wardrobe.
* If for any reason you have yet to purchase yourself a cashmere piece, do it this fall! Keep an eye out for sales and promotions... they are everywhere and cashmere is now available at almost any price point. The material is natural, breathable and oh so warm, comfy & chic! It doesn't get any better!

Rest ~ Stand back, take a look at the good work you have done and pat yourself on the back! You should feel FREE! Immediately pack up all clothes for charity or a local garage sale and get them out of your closet. DO NOT LET THEM SIT THERE. The freedom and ease of mind that comes from purging and re-organizing will not be yours until this is done. If you have a particularly out of control closet space think about taking before & after pictures. The sense of accomplishment will bring a huge smile to your face and you will be a source of inspiration to those around you; colleagues, friends, family, busy moms, traveling women and everyone else!

Please email me your before and after closet photos! I think it would be fun and encouraging to see your hard work, creativity and newly defined spaces.
Happy Autumn,
Kelli

I am definitely de-cluttering Kelli, but I am not sure if I am just moving things from one place to another...Have a happy weekend, xv.

Kelli,
I have been mulling this over and then read your blog today and realized you'd be an amazing resource!!!
We are doing a master bedroom addition as we speak (and fast before the baby arrives)! Part of the blessing is that I have a brand new amazing walk-in closet that I must design asap!
Do you have any really good space tips? What closet elements do I want to build into it? Any suggestions?
Thanks so much,
Melissa

Wow Melissa,

This is exciting!! This is also a very LOADED question when you have a style/designer/organizer brain like mine!
To give you really good, personalized advice I would need to see the space and know all the possibilities (size, dimensions, budget, etc).
However off the top of my head consider the following:
*** What are YOUR individual and personal needs for this dedicated space?
Do you LOVE shoes, belts, scarves, jackets, or etc.? Think about specific & appropriate storage for each. Look through catalogs, magazines, etc. for inspiration if you haven't yet.
*** Cedar is a closet's best friend! Consider a built in cedar chest portion for pricey cashmere, special pieces or even have your shoe rack made out of it.
*** Lighting, lighting and more lighting!!! Be sure they install spots ALL over - more than you think you need - especially if there is not a window in your walk in. Also consider hanging a stylish chandelier in the middle of your space for more pizazz!
*** Think about undergarment/lingerie storage. Lavender scented drawer lining, etc...
*** What about your jewelry? Are you the type of person that would better create outfits if all your jewelry was also housed in your walk-in?
*** Consider adding a safe for your valuables.
*** Add a full length mirror.
*** Depending on the layout of the space it is nice to have a covered bench or ottoman.
*** Purchase great quality sweater bags or have cedar cubbies created and mounted on your closet wall to house your sweaters.
*** Ventilation is important to keeping clothes in tip-top condition not to mention less "smelly"! Whether we like it or not we each have an individual scent that over time creeps into our closets and onto all of our clothes. For fresher smelling clothes install an environmentally friendly air freshener as well.
*** Ask the contractor to add at least 2 outlets to this space. One on your side and one on your hubby's. You might not think you need electricity now but it will come in handy someday!
I hope this helps!! Please send me a new picture or 2 once the space has been completed. I would love to see what you have done with it.
Bisous,
Kelli

Beautiful, Kelli! Thanks for the advice. I'll send some pictures when it's complete. I probably won't do the cedar just due to space and budget, but I have a good idea of where I'm going to go now that we talked. You are the BEST!!!
