Reader Question ~ Ankle Booties & Boots

Kelli,

For those of us that are boot "newbies" can you give us some tips on what to wear the ankle boots with, other than pants of course! Do we need to match them to our hosiery?

Thanks,

Christina,

Thanks for your question! With booties and ankle boots all the rage this fall and winter, let's get down to business!

These type of chausseurs & bottines are chic and certainly a bit trendy but surprisingly easy to wear! Of course, you can throw on your new booties with any pair of pants you would like! To spice things up why not wear them with a fishnet knee-high for a peek of sexy under your trousers?!?

Oxford Booties Suede Booties Leather Shoe Booties
I love these 3 I found online at Saks Fifth Avenue! The possibilities are endless since the styles resemble a pump as well as bootie.
Try the far left pair with black ribbed tights & a LBD, for a more classic look. Those of you that are more daring, slip on your red cocktail dress for an evening of sexy! Just because this is an ankle boot, doesn't mean you need to think of it any differently than you do your other metallic shoes in your closet.
The teal suede pair would look adorable with a {mini} skirt or shorts and a cozy sweater.
The oxford-inspired bootie would look "professional with personality" when paired with a chocolate brown tweed skirt suit for work or with a denim pencil skirt and a soft romantic off white blouse covered by a burnt orange cardigan sweater for the weekend.

Promiscuous Beautiful
For the bold only! Keep your outfit & other accessories to a minimum. Let the shoes be the star!

Steve Madden Betsey
Slouchy gray ankle boots
Wear with a mini skirt to show off those legs!

GUESS by Marciano Novae
Cognac suede bootie
TIP: For the illusion of ultra long legs throw on the same color tights and a dress or skirt and you are out the door! Simple, beautiful and oh so fashion!

Corso Como Caroline
Silver Booties
TIP: Pair these beauties with a mini skirt, tee shirt & leather jacket for a true Rocker Chic look!

Sergio Rossi Bea
Gorgeous flesh tone suede booties
I love these! They remind me of a shoe that Marie-Antoinette would have adored! Let out the French fashion diva inside each of you and don these lovelies for a weekend soiree or holiday party.
TIP for petites: If you are petite stick with the same color palette. Feel free to vary a few shades however by keeping the same color all over you will appear taller all around!
TIP for longer legs: If you happen to be blessed by height, you have more freedom with color choices. You could pair these booties with a colored tight or a brightly hued dress.
TIP for everyone: Wearing a shoe that is similar in color to your skin tone will automatically elongate your leg line and give the appearance of one who is taller, longer and svelte! Who doesn't want that?!!?

Diba Mallorie
Black rushed leather booties
TIP: A classic bootie that can be worn with anything and everything! Promise me though that you won't get stuck in a black shoe rut! If all you own are black boots, make a vow to purchase one of color this season!

rsvp Grace
Black patent & suede oxford-inspired booties
TIP: If you insist on buying another pair of black shoes, be sure that they have some visual interest and something a little more unique, like the gorgeous booties above. These can easily be worn at the office or dressed up for date night!

TIPS for skirts, dresses & shorts
Just follow these simple guidelines to find the look that bests suits your body type

If you are petite {5'2" & under}: I highly recommend that you match the color of your tights, nylons or leggings to the color of your booties or boots. Again, this helps create a long, continuous leg line that will make you appear taller. If you break up that line with different colors, you will be chopping your body into sections and the eye will not know where to settle therefore causing confusion. You will appear shorter and potentially a little "fuller"...

If your stems happen to be a little thick: Purchase a bootie that has an open vamp, much like the style of the 2nd photo up top {teal suede bootie}. This will again, help give the appearance of a longer leg line since the vamp of the shoe comes down so close to the toes and is open. There is nothing there that will tell the eye to break a continuous line. For the teal bootie, I do NOT recommend wearing teal tights {yikes!} so go for chocolate brown, charcoal gray or black.

If your stems are long: Well, good news! You can get away with much more than the rest of us. Feel free to wear true ankle boots and different color hosiery with your booties and boots. If you decide to wear a true ankle bootie, like the silver ones shown above, throw on a mini skirt or short dress and a little jacket, cardigan or sweater. We want to see those legs!

Outfit Idea:
Throw on this gorgeous purple & black Marc Jacobs top with a pair of L.A.M.B. slim fit ankle jeans finishing off with the black patent & suede MIA ankle bootie. Add some glamour with a few metallic bangles and a pop of red with a great handbag. You are all set for an evening out with the girls or a hot date with your significant other!

    Hi again Kelli,
Thanks for the link. I am definately spluging on these hot little shoes! I love them, I'm a sucker for a pair of shoes I used to live in Brea (I was a buyer for Nordstroms & my office was there) but I moved out of the OC when I got married. I don't live far though, about 20 - 30 minutes from the Orange crush! I live in Alta Loma but my heart is in the OC. I'm probably there more than I am home Thanks agin for the fab link for my new shoes! Loved the post!

Well, thank you Fifi! I appreciate your kind words!!
Being a California girl as well, I don't think I owned very many close-toed shoes prior to my big move to Paris back in 2000. It was weird for my manicured {or is that pedicured} feet to be stuck in socks, tights and boots all winter. Now, I have adapted a bit of both. You and I are lucky to be able to wear open-toed chausseurs almost year round!!
There are some adorable booties out there that are a bit more on the "peep toe" side, if you are interested in trying them out this winter!
BTW ~ I LOVE Target! I always advise my clients that when they stop in for TP, cotton balls or a birthday card to browse the women's section along with the accessories! I always find great things for an even greater price!
