Happy 4th of July!

                             Happy 4th of July!

I wish you each a wonderful weekend full of fun, family, friends and a great time remembering this grand country. If you have been following my blog for a while you know that I am a "patriot" through and through and yet I also share space in my heart with France. Tomorrow is my home country's day to shine, celebrate and look forward to many more years of freedom and give gratitude for all we have. As for my 2nd home country, La France, I will be there on the 14 juillet to celebrate Fete de la Bastille, their independence day.

I just love July!!!

The Hotel del Coronado
My Hubby and I will be spending the day in Coronado tomorrow. It still feels like small town America, we were married there and we just love the laid back, vacation vibe. It is also a very patriotic area of the city and for tomorrow, you just can't get any better than that!

Oh, I'm Halfway There... Oh, Livin' on a Prayer...

Just a quick post to say bonjour as I run around finishing things up before the holiday weekend and begin packing for my flight next week.

My beautiful cousin stopped by this morning to say hi and see my prego belly. She brought our little girl her 1st gift! A pair of adorable shoes, OF COURSE!!!

Thank you cousin Cara! These little shoes are a really cute pink, floral fabric. SO FUN!
The red ones I purchased a few months back on the hunch that she would be a girl!

A bientot,
Kelli

A Long-Awaited Dream Come True!

                                                      La Vie en Rose
 We talk about it, ponder about what it must be like, daydream about calling this city home {be it even if only for a little while} and try to attain a bit of la vie francaise; then... live it, love it, experience it and strive to never forget it!

Magic, romance, history, art, culinary delights, shopping galore, fashion, fun, sultry summer nights and chilly, snow-filled November evenings, Christmas in the city, fresh baked baguettes, the best coffee ever, the sweetest friends, international knowledge, stretching life experiences, growing up and fast {9/11 experience abroad}, using a laundro-mat, living without an oven, riding only on public transportation, never getting behind the wheel, delighting in the bright evening view of the city all aglow, spending countless fêtes with precious friends and loved ones,

being proposed to under the Arc de Triomphe as the Eiffel Tower sparkled in the background, perusing les puces, swooping up some of the best candles in the world at Diptyque, falling in love with "new" things on a daily basis, loathing how certain other things seem not to "work" as well in France, climbing endless flights of stairs, mastering the art of wearing stilettos on ancient cobblestone streets, enjoying a lunch alone at a small bistro in a petite square in the Marais, wondering why does it have to take SO long to get the check, riding the metro through the chicest parts of the city and riding it as well through the doggy areas, meeting amazing people from around the world, forming lasting friendships with ex-pats... they know what life is like abroad, working at a world famous company that sits on a breathtaking, historical site about 30 minutes outside the city, along with a couple other jobs in different areas of the city that each gave me a great knowledge of all the arrondissements. I used to be a walking map of paris from the 2 years I spent working at a furnished rental apartment company. My last job in the city, prior to moving home, I had the pleasure of working with a wonderful lady who has now long been a fabulous friend! {I can't wait to see her and her beautiful daughter next Saturday.} I would take almost daily walks to La Poste and oh darn, I just had to pass the Hermès flagship store on rue du Fbg. St. Honoré! Don't doubt that I will be popping in for a splurge or two while I am there!

Many of you know that I lived 4 years in Paris. I met my hubby there, worked and lived out the Parisian daily grind and my dream of living abroad. Yes, I rode the stinky metro and the crowded RER, lived in a chambre de bonne for a while along with other very petite apartments, shopped for food at least 3 times a week, spent hours walking this wondrous city, had a very spiritual experience one rainy evening in the Notre-Dame and am thankful everyday for the life changing experience I had as a young-middle 20's American living in France.

Right after we got engaged under the Arc de Triomphe ~ Dec. 9, 2005

Finally, after 3.5 years of waiting, thinking about Paris everyday and talking about returning I am set to leave next Friday for a whole month! This is my last hurrah trip before becoming a maman. My dear husband knows how much I need to get away, relax, visit with old friends, shop for the baby and the nursery {Amen for Les Soldes!}, and just wander the streets of the city I love so much. I will be in Paris for about 2.5 weeks, Berlin for 5 days and the South of France for a week. A month seems like a long time however I know that it is going to fly by! I will enjoy eating all things French and give my little miss a taste of new culinary delights!

Me and our petit bébé can't wait to sink out teeth into the delicious, seasonal produce and products that will be found in abundance at the farmers markets. There is a marché bio close to the friend's house I am staying with in Paris... Yippie!!!

I will be staying with these lovely ladies in Paris

                        And this fun couple in Berlin

My soul longs to experience les champs de lavande in the South of France! I'm planning to spend the 1st week of August in the South, sipping lemonade, visiting brocantes, farmers markets and just enjoying the beauty around me.

Would anyone like to come along and join me for a randonée in the expansive Jardins de Versailles?
Nothing like a little lunch in beautiful surroundings and a bit of tragic history, fashion trend-setting and opulence to take us away!

I will be heading straight to Ladurée on Saturday when I land! I can't wait to dive into a plate filled with macarons and other delights! This is just what the Dr. ordered!!!

I will try to post a few more times prior to my flight that is VERY early next Friday morning. We are finishing up our bathroom renovation tomorrow {thank God!}, heading out for 4th of July and then next week I will be packing and wrapping up loose ends before saying au revoir to my hubby for a whole month!

Until next time...
Happy July! Joyeux Anniversaire to all my July Birthday readers!

Les Soldes Paris – Part 2 – The Diva’s Bargain Shopping Route

The Diva has done it again! She posted another fabulous read giving us all her juicy sales secrets along with some of her favorite addresses on her shopping itineraire for the Paris Soldes!

However, please read with caution... your desire to shop... in Paris... will peak while reading this!!!

Merci chère Diva et a trés bientot!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
READER WARNING!
If you are not a serious bargain shopper, do not bother reading any further.
I like Louis Vuitton, Valentino and Loubouton as much as the rest of you, but in fact, I hate to spend money on clothes. I’d rather spend my euro on antiques and on travel, thus, I shop only a few times a year and always buy bottom-dollar on sale. I save the Hermes, Chanel and Dior purchases as presents from my husband – putting in requests years in advance on “major wants” so that I have time to drop continual hints until he picks up on it and eventually returns home with little blue sacks and the like.
In today’s blog I’m going to take you on a tour of my favorite stores in Paris – in fact, I’m going to walk you through the very route I shop twice a year at the Paris sales. Not only that, but I’m also going to fess up, showing some of my most sensational buys. I might play the diva on the internet, but I was a
“recessionista before the recession was cool”. You can blame it on my CFO-husband if you like - he’s all about the numbers, budgeting and the like - but truth be told, even without his ever-present spreadsheet, I love nothing more than a bargain! I have dozens of cocktails dresses, but would you believe I’ve purchased one of those dazzling dresses for as low as 15 Euro, marked down from 300 Euro, at the Paris sales?
And of course, while I’m out shopping for bargain fashion, I always tend to find myself stumbling into antique shops, decorating stores and specialty boutiques… They don’t call me The Antiques Diva™ for nothing, after all.
So set back, fasten your seat belt and get ready to
STOP
DROP
and
SHOP!
The Antiques Diva Exclusive Bargain Shopping Paris’ Les Soldes
When: Day One – The Paris Sales
Repeat Route: Last Week Paris Sales
8.30 am Chez Paul – Corner Rue de Buci and Rue de Seine. I take a seat and order a café crème and les escargot at Chez Paul. No, I didn’t order snails for breakfast; Paul merely affectionately calls their pain au raisin “snails”. Study Paris 6eme arrondisment map. Review shopping “needs and wants list”. Verify pin codes for all credit cards. Confirm appropriate attire in place for shopping day – today it's leggings, a tank top and long cashmere wrap that pulls off in one motion allowing me to stand in the aforementioned, trying on clothes in the middle of the store when the lines for the dressing rooms are too long. I’m ready for action.
9.00 am – Get waitress’ attention, “l'addition, s'il vous plait”.
9.30 am – Attempt repeatedly to flag down waitress. Waitress expertly ignores my pleas. Eventually lets me pay my bill and I remind myself that I’ve made my first mistake of the day: bring correct change next time. I walk out the door and across street to
O & Co at #28 Rue de Buci. They often don’t do “les soldes” but I pick up some Mandarin Orange Olive Oil and soap even though they are not on sale. Second mistake of the day: only shop for sales. Time is money. And using time to shop for non-sale items isn’t maximizing my day. I’d best get better.
9.45 am – Meander back towards Paul, past the line out the front door, and past the flower market and café where my mom sat next to Karl Lagerfeld. I walk towards end of Rue de Buci to Allison at # 3.
9.55 am – I wait at the door for the store to unlock at 10am. Store clerk sees me and 4 other ladies lingering and she takes pity on us, opening the door early. My favorite brands are all on sale at Allison - Antiek Batik, Maje, See by Chloé and Paul & Joe. For the sales they mark clothes down with dots, everything with green dot 50E, blue dot 75E, red dot 100E, black dot 150E etc… I walk past all these dots at the front of the tiny store and work my way to the back of the store. Along the far wall they usually post their serious sales here.
Would you believe I bought this dress below for only 15E at Allison? Marked down from 300E – granted the price was majorly inflated to begin with, but at 15E I would have been stupid not to have bought it. In fact, my friend
The Swiss Miss bought the same dress at the same time!
And this one for only 30E? Marked down from 150E
Both dresses were purchased at Allison several summers apart! Don’t I look young in this last picture? I was in my late 20’s! My how time flies!
10.30 am - Cross the street (Rue de Buci) to Taschen Book Store and check out the sale table sitting outside for calendars as well as travel, decorating and art books. I stock up on hosting presents.
10.45 am – Turn right from Rue de Buci onto Rue de l’Ancienne Comedie (but before doing so, I jog back to the left on Rue Mazarine to peek into some art gallery windows). To relieve guilt of any further spending which is about to commence, I go to # 3
Café Coton and pick up a few French-cuff dress shirts for my husband. He looks dazzling in French blue.
11.05 am – Duty fulfilled, I walk down a few doors to # 7 and hit Rene Derhy for casual prêt a porter and brightly colored summer dresses. Another bargain scored! I picked this sweet casual summer sundress ½ price for 35E.
Of course, an even better Rene Derhy purchase was this cocktail dress down from 130E to 40E.
11.20 am – From Rue de l’Ancienne Comedie, I cross Boulevard St. Germain to Rue de Conde and turn right onto Rue St. Sulpice. First stop, # 23 Marie Mercie, a husband and wife hat-making team that sells off-the-rack and haute couture hats that are simply to die for. Women’s hats (not on sale) will set you back a hefty 180E, while men’s hats run 100E. Even if I’m not in the market to buy a new hat, I go inside and dream, wishing I had more occasions when I could wear a hat.
This hat I didn’t buy at Marie Mercie, but instead picked up almost 7 years ago in Provence. I paid 30E at the time and it’s served me well.
11.30 am – I drop by # 23
J.C. Martinez Gravure Anciennes to check out the antique prints, maps, etchings and lithographs. Next stop at # 29 – Maison de Famille.
Noon
– “Les Soldes” are too serious and time is too precious to stop for lunch. The breakfast escargots have long since been burned up by the power shopping and now I’m looking for a vendor selling “hot dog on baguette with horseradish”. I chuckle to myself over how it sounds like I said “oat dog” instead of hot dog when I pronounce the word in French.
Rewind. Back-up.
Noon Version 2 - If I’m shopping with my husband, I return to 81, Rue de Seine for entrecote frites at Peres et Filles. Husband returns home/hotel to sleep off lunch.
I continue back to St Sulpice – Resume Tour.
Whilst eating my hot dog lunch, I pause in the square in front of Eglise Saint Sulpice to admire church now of DaVinci Code fame. I search the crowds for Catherine Deneuve exiting her apartment overlooking the square.
She, like Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O, is one of my style icons. Sexy, glamorous, and classic!
From the Place St Sulpice I follow Vieux Colombier towards Rue de Sevres, turn left passing bizarre statue of man-horse at Carrefour de Croix Rouge. I’ve always meant to stop and read the plaque, but there is no time for that today.
12.30 pm I window shop my way down Rue de Sevre towards Le Bon Marche, stopping at # 22, Furla offers excellent handbag sales.
13.00 hours - I hit Le Bon Marche. It’s my favorite Paris department store, this store built by Gustave Eiffel of Tower fame. While Galleries Lafayette and Printemps are larger, I’m a Left Bank Girl. Admittedly, the sales aren’t as good at Bon Marche as at the aforementioned, but over the years, I’ve scored some excellent purchases. Take, for example, this pink linen dress originally 180E bought for 75% off - a mere 45E. Another 20-something picture of me!
14.00 hours – Exit Le Bon Marche onto the Rue de Bac, crossing the street to enter Le Grand Epicerie (Le Bon Marche’s grocery store) to pick up a few picnic essentials to eat under the trees in a small park overlooking the Eiffel Tower. WG and I love sneaking picnics of foie gras and chocolate, champagne and strawberries when we’re in Paris.
14.30 hours - I begin walking from Bon Marche down the Rue de Bac towards Boulevard St Germain, zigzagging across the street to hit # 101
Magna Carta and on corner of Rue de Varene an excellent linen store Diners en Ville. On the opposite side of road, I watch for # 122 Farman Aviation Antiques to seek out a present for my husband who is hobby pilot. Then off to #116 Le Grand Comptoir, picking up cute accessories for my home at bargain-bin prices and to #108 A La Mine d’Argent for all my silver needs. Then it’s time for the gorgeous home decorating store at #104 Blanc d’Ivoire and at # 100 Du Bout du Monde with its eclectic finds.
One of my favorite Bout du Monde purchases was this star-shaped candle-holder on sale for 12E.
Oh yes! This reminds me, see the iron garden bench in the background of this picture above? Here’s a better look below…
That was a Le Cedre Rouge (#116 Rue de Bac) half price purchase for 120E- it barely fit in the backseat of our Volvo when we drove it home from Paris to Amsterdam! Remind me to tell you later about the evolution of this bench from a seat on my roof-top terrace to front center seating in my living room! In fact, if you look at the 4th picture down in this blog of me standing in the door way of my Holland home, over my left shoulder you’ll see this find in its “before” state!
16.00 hours – Turn right from Rue de Bac onto Boulevard St. Germain, shopping in the direction of Eglise St Germain. Hit
Fragonard at #196 for perfume and travel accessories, wonderful hosting presents and birthday packages and then Gerard Darel at #174 – keeping my eyes peeled for the 75% off stickers! When shopping the sales one day with Lady Lotus, I found a black silk skirt with a 150E multi-colored butterfly print skirt on sale for 38E. Sadly, though I wear it often, I can’t find a photo of myself in it.
18.00 hours – Exhausted, I stop for a glass of rosé wine at
Les Deux Magots. Text my husband from my mobile. “Missing u. Join me 4 drink?” which is code for “I have too many sacks to carry on my own.” I sit, people-watching, believing if I sit here long enough, I watch all the world walk by.
Bon Shopping and Bonne Chance scoring “les bon marches”!
Healthy Inspirations June 2009 ~ Guest Post by Mindy Goldis
                     Mindy aka AGELESS RAW BEAUTYtm
        Answers Your Questions Along with Offering ARWS Readers Monthly Recipes,
                                 Tips and Tidbits Related to Health and Longevity
The expression you hear in Southern California for June is “June gloom.”  I do not look at it that way, even though some days the sun never comes out in the beach area, where I live.  My June is never gloomy, as it is when I take time out to give my body a rest and a chance to become cleaner and healthier.  Before every new season, I do a 21 day cleanse and have been fasting/cleansing since 2004, on a regular basis.  I don't recommend anyone start off by trying to do it for this long.  Start with 1 day a week and then progress from there.  I am now in the midst of my cleanse and have one week left.  You can check out my blog posts for my 21 day journey/cleanse here.
I encourage anyone who reads my guest blogs here at ARWS to send in their questions or topics they would like to see covered on my monthly post.  Last month, I mentioned that I would tell you why salt isn't good for you to ever consume.  Growing up we are given information that isn't always the correct or right one.  Society/organizations tries to “push”the public to use/consume things that are really detrimental to our lives.  In fact, they know that these aren't healthful, but they don't come from a “warm and fuzzy place.” There needs to be those of us (like me) who will tell you the truth and filter out what is hype and what is real.  Salt is one of those things, we may have thought was o.k. to use, but it is not.  When I was eating according to the macrobiotic lifestyle, we used sea salt, which is supposed to be better than the table or iodized variety.  I now know that no kind of salt has any benefit to the body, in any way shape or form.
Here is the reason why (this information is so important for you to know, that I am including an article written by someone else on this topic)
Super Food Or Blood Burning Poison
by Roger Haeske
Did you know that there's a food or more accurately a condiment that's being marketed as a health food but it's actuality, it's a corrosive cellular poison?
In fact, it's so poisonous that if you consume just one ounce of it at a time, you will die an incredibly painful death. Yet this stuff is considered health food. And yet others consider it a human necessity and that is an absolute falsehood.
There have been certain American Indian cultures that didn't even know what this condiment was and never consumed it.
I know it's not something we need for health because I stopped consuming it on a regular basis over five years ago. The only problem is that I sometimes end up consuming it accidentally when I go out to raw food restaurants.
They mistakenly add this substance to virtually all of their recipes to make them taste better. Yet after I've eaten those meals, my blood burns. So do other parts of my body. When I have too much of this stuff, nothing works right the next day.  It just makes me out of it and ruins my day.  It's totally corrosive and destructive and yet these fools will try to tell you it's a health food because it's loaded with minerals. Would you consume arsenic just because it was loaded with minerals?
So here's the problem, many people know this is a bad substance, but they've been told that they need to consume some of it. As I said before we don't need to consume any of it whatsoever. At least not in the form that most people get it.
What other bad things does this substance do? Well it kills weeds and plants that come into contact with it. It also kills many kinds of bacteria. It's actually an antibiotic. This means anti-life.
Do you want to consume something that's anti-life?
It's also used as a preservative. It's a way to keep meat fresh in the absence of refrigeration. Do you want to eat preservatives? Not if you're health conscious you don't. It preserves because it kills.
Do you want to consume something that kills your cells?
There's another major drawback to this substance, when you consume it, it deadens your taste buds for two hours. You'll have a hard time tasting anything that's sweet, sour or bitter.
Eating this condiment regularly is what makes it hard for people to go raw. They simply can't appreciate the flavors in delicious fruits and vegetables because they've managed to deaden their taste buds with the over use of this caustic poison.
So have you guessed what this is yet?
In case you haven't its ordinary table salt (NaCl) or sodium chloride. You have zero need for salt. That's right, you don't need it at all to be healthy. You know already that it can cause high blood pressure. But you probably had no idea that it was actually ripping you up and burning you when you ate it.
You see, you can't feel the damage salt does to you if you eat it every day. Your body does the best it can to protect you from your indiscretions. But I can feel it when I eat it. And let me tell you, it hurts. It burns me up from the inside out.
It makes my blood boil. I can feel it because I hardly ever eat salt. So when I do my body is not prepared for it and I can feel the pain it causes soon after eating. I urge you to stop eating salt as soon as possible.
You won't believe how much better your health will be. You'll even become a better athlete. I think one of the reasons I can endure the heat so well is because I don't consume salt.
I also have a feeling that eating salt will prematurely age you. One thing is certain consuming salt makes your body more acidic. Yes sodium is an alkaline mineral but when you consume it as table salt it's actually acidifying or pH lowering.
According to Dave Klein the editor of Living Nutrition Magazine, he's found many of his health coaching clients won't heal until they stop consuming salt. This is even though the rest of their diet is really top notch and raw.
How can you expect to poison yourself to health? It ain't happenin.
So if you've gone 100% raw congratulations. That's a great achievement. But when are you going to give up salt? If you could only see and feel the actual damage you were doing to your body, you'd give it up in an instant.
I know plenty of people that don't consume salt anymore. Get rid of this idea that you need to consume it, that's just garbage or misinformation.
Forget the fancy Sea Salt, Himalayan Rock Salt or any other kind of salt. Regardless of how many minerals there are in it, it's still poison. It will still kill cells in your body.
We best get our salt from vegetables. The other kind is a burning and cell killing poison. The Chinese used to take one ounce of salt as a method of committing suicide.
I could go on and on about the dangers of table salt. Please don't fall for the sea salt scams. It's all a bunch of marketing nonsense.
I hope you got as much out of this article, as I have.  Below, I continue with my own writing.
                                     HEALTH TIP ~ JUNE 2009
Our bodies require minerals, one of them being sodium.  Our heart is a “sodium pump.”  There is plenty of this mineral available in celery, spinach and tomatoes.   If you are looking for something to replace salt that is beneficial to the body, then you can try kelp powder.  You can use it freely without any harm to the body.  Kelp is a sea vegetable/seaweed that is filled with alkalizing minerals like calcium, magnesium and iron.  It is even known to eliminate heavy metal toxicity from the body.  Kelp tastes “salty” and you can flavor your soups, salads and other dishes with it to your liking.  You can have a shaker container on your table, so anyone who wants to add more to their food, can do so liberally.  Another sea vegetables that you can use as a substitute for salt, is dulse powder.  If you have a health food store in your neighborhood, ask them to carry kelp and dulse powder or you can do a search online to find a company that carries it.
                                   HEALTHY RECIPE ~ JUNE 2009
The summer is coming and it is time to eat light and simple as the weather gets warmer, we prefer to spend less time in the kitchen preparing food and more time outside with family and friends.  My eating habits are very simple, so for me, it is as easy as grabbing some fruit and carrying with me.  For those of you who want to make something yummy and refreshing, how about a fruit smoothie.
 Some great combinations are:
  1. Cantaloupe, peaches and nectarines with a couple of fresh mint sprigs
2. Watermelon, strawberries and raspberries with a squeeze of lime juice
3. Mango, apricots and a squeeze of orange juice
   Y
ou can put this in a thermos or glass jar (please avoid plastics at all      costs...more on that next month) and take it with you for your day at the beach, park, etc.  The possibilities are endless, especially with the abundance of fruit available during this time of year.
I would like to end this post with one of my poems, again, taken from an upcoming book I will be self-publishing, entitled: “My Inspirations: Short and Sweet/Heart Notes”
“Nobody owns anything, because everything belongs to no one.” Copyright 2009
STAY TUNED!  Next month I will post some very important information about the use of plastics and why they are very toxic.
See you in July,
Mindy aka Ageless Raw Beautytm
On Your Mark, Get Set, GO! Les Soldes Commence a Paris!!!
Bonjour!
This is one happy day in France, the beginning of Les Soldes! One of the best times of the year to be in France is either in January or late June/July while the whole country goes on sale. Prices are slashed, people are out buying and it is a joyful time of finding new treasures to bring home. Of course the latest fashions are on sale so hurry, this event only happens twice a year!!!
My dear friend, The Antiques Diva, wrote a wonderful post on Les Soldes and I wanted to share it with you.
A bientot et bon shopping,
Kelli
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Late Breaking News!

Get your charge cards ready… On your mark, get set, it’s time for the Paris Sales!

Les Soldes start June 24th and run until July 28th, 2009

Dear Diva Readers,

All over Paris (and France for that matter) prices will be slashed, cut and discounted and rumor has it that the discounts will be unbelievable this year – tout le monde is discussing la crise economique and shoppers can cash in on unbelievable savings!

An American friend visiting me once when I lived in Paris asked, “What’s up with everyone being ga-ga over the Paris sales? What’s so special about them?” After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I explained, “In France, the sales are state mandated. The government regulates the sales and so les soldes occur only twice a year. It’s not like America where there is a sale every week!” My friend, grasping that it was important she understand the finer points of this discussion, inquired “But why would the government care if there were sales all year? Don’t they know it’s good for the economy?”

“Economy-Smonomy!” I responded, “The socialist democracy of France has higher pursuits than the economy!” Barb Wilde, author of
The French Gardening blog and owner of the online-shop L’Atelier Vert explains this phenomenon better than anyone else I know. She writes:

“Without government regulation, stores were buying in cheap junk merchandise just for their sales and then pretending that it was good stuff they had marked down. (Imagine!)

To protect the French populace from such outrageous and unfair treatment (on the part of merchants--government bureaucrats are neatly excluded here), the state mandated that sales would take place only for a period of about 5 weeks in January and February, and again in July and August. Only pre-existing merchandise--ostensibly end-of-the-season stuff--is allowed to be marked down.

In fact, this has become an assimilated part of French commercial culture. Before the winter sales, for instance, it's nearly impossible to find anything springy, for example. May the gods of French shopping have pity on you if you need summery clothes to go someplace warm over the holidays. "Resort wear" simply doesn't appear at least until the soldes begin--well after the holidays. The markdown of the old wintry stuff miraculously allows the nouvelles collections to start appearing. Out with the old and in with the new. Literally.

The markdowns begin rather modestly--usually at 10%--and then become deeper as the sale weeks roll by, finishing up at a whopping 50 to 70% on whatever's left at the end. Thus, shoppers play a sort of solde roulette, gambling on whether their desired purchase will stay around long enough to be marked down more deeply. Or if like me, they're too busy to get out early, they simply get lucky--or unlucky, as the case may be. Wealthy international shoppers are of course crazy about the soldes, and in the large department stores during the first couple of weeks of the sales, you hear almost any language but French spoken by the shoppers who have descended on Paris from all over the world to get a bargain.

But the state-mandated soldes, like so many French rules, have a loophole – promotions.”

Typically stores sneak in mini-mid-year sales called Promotions and thus get around the loophole that stores are only allowed to have sales twice a year.

Prior to le crise financieres you never saw the words “Les Soldes” used outside of the designated period… but when I was in Paris this April taking Travel+Leisure on an antiques shopping tour with Claudia Strasser of Paris Apartments, I saw something that I have never seen before - Quelle Horror! Les Soldes signs were hanging outside of Galleries Lafayette NOT DURING the official sale period!!! What has happened to France? On recent trips to Paris I’ve noticed that vendors - as soon as they heard my American accent - responded to my French inquiries in English (something which pre-Sarko never happened to me!) and they even smiled whilst doing so! Is it possible that France is changing? And now this… sales during a non-sale period?

Discussions with friends surmised that the economy was so low that the big vendors were willing to face the risk of government fines for “soldes-ing” out of “season”. Further supposition among friends-in-the-know indicates that this summer’s Paris sale might just be the best sale yet! And I’m going to miss it!!! Tant pis pour moi! But, my loss is your gain for this year in a special Les Soldes Antiques Diva blog, I’m going to let you in “behind the scenes” on my typical shopping route for the first day of the Paris sales!

And for those armchair travelers out there – never fear, I haven’t forgotten you!
Courtney Traube, Paris Travel Expert on About.com, writes:

“Many top Paris stores, including Galeries Lafayette, have online stores offering sale items. If you're not too daunted by the French, you can also try navigating specialized websites like 1000 Bonnes Affaires or L'internaute, which provide quick overviews of the best deals being offered in hundreds of stores. Remember, though, that not all stores ship outside of France.”

In other words, you might want to verify shipping options before you start online shopping!

In the meantime, TaTa for now, I’ll blog to you later!

Bon Shopping!

Everyday Life Takes a Detour

Hello Everyone!

I apologize for just dropping off the face of blogland for almost 2 weeks! I hope you are all well! Last week was a crazy one for me and this Monday we started demo on our one & only bathroom in our adorable, little 1948 home. We were without internet for a few days as well and have "moved in" with my family until we have a working bathroom once again. Let's just say that I am in and out, running around town at all hours, of every day. Looking at materials, colors, designs, etc. while the hubby is at work. It's a crazy life but we know it is worth every second of our time, displacement and money. Soon we will be 3 and this bathroom renovation and enlargement will make our life, while sharing a bathroom, a bit easier!

Before Demo

1st hole... among many!

1st day demo. It was a MESS!

New whirlpool tub frame is in! I can't wait to soak in our new jet-tub!

Yippee... tile is down and will be grouted tomorrow!

I hope to be back soon posting on fashion, style and fun things for the summer! There are many exciting plans in the works for me over the next couple of months and I will share them with you as the time approaches.

Until next time...
Enjoy the sunshine, brighten up your life with color and take a long walk along the beach, lake, river or pond and let your soul breathe.

Bisous,
Kelli

With a Tropical Touch

Wishing you a wonderful weekend! I hope you have time to stop and smell the roses... oh yes, and other beautiful flowers. Here are a few of my favorite shots of tropical beauties hailing from the island of Hawai'i.

Bon Weekend,

On My Mind

I'm feeling a bit random this morning and it doesn't help that all I can think about it this!

My mom and I have been working on the kitchen over the past 5 days. It needs quite a bit of updating and I find it funny how you think a quick, fun thing such as hanging new café style curtains will be easy... then you realize the wood window frames need a lot of TLC prior to the hanging of the curtains! It does feel good to accomplish something that can be so slow, detailed and sometimes tedious. We see the progress and I am happy to be getting this done since my pre-baby goal, if at all possible, is to have every other room "done" {to the best of my capability, budget and time allowance} before le bébé arrives. My hubby and mom will begin attacking the nursery in September.

How absolutely dreamy is this bedroom!!! Light, airy and oh-so Parisian! I stumbled upon this photo this morning over at The Paris Apartment. The bed linens look so comfy, I adore the soft green bedside table and those roses, they just set off the whole look of the room for me. I could very well see myself spending quite a few restful, Parisian nights in a room like this!!
Let me just say... Paris has been on my mind lately... A LOT!

Introducing another site I just found this morning,

Bisous,
